Behind The Songs #2: Invisible Net

Invisible Net is a song with a long history. It started out as a writing exercise after watching Man On Wire in 2010. I liked the rhythm of "I'm standing on a high wire" and just wrote a few pages of second lines, and the verses unfolded from those. I then wrote the chord progression for the verse. In very short order the  rest of the song came together. I particularly like playing with E minor vs E major to pivot back and forth from major key to minor key. (The verse is in C major, the chorus in A minor. E major leads to A minor, E minor leads more easily back to C major)

The song is musically inspired by the late David Bowie in a couple key ways: I've always loved the riff for Space Oddity and perhaps a bit subconsciously the chord progression and the repetition of words came from some of those chords. The other slightly more obvious way is in the drum only fade up which was inspired by Five Years.

Really the song for me is about taking risks and having faith in support around you if you fail. In my life, I've always had fears of taking risks and very often would balk at them, or do everything I can to avoid them, in order to avoid being alone in my failure. The film inspired in me a sense that all it takes to change is taking one small step. And every small step forward takes you closer to who you want to be. Taking those small steps are hard, and perhaps this song was just one small step for me.

Here are the lyrics, and take a listen to the song on my player:

I'm standing on a highwire, just testing gravity

Standing on a highwire, with the birds flying under me

I'm standing on a highwire, so high I can't hear a sound

And they told me never look down never look down never look down

So I never look down

I'm standing on a highwire, skycrapers next to me

Standing on a highwire, they're broken cathedrals from a dream

I'm standing on a highwire, a mile above the ground

And they told me never look down, never look down, never look down

So I never look down to see

Your eyes looking at me

Chorus:

There's an invisible net waiting that's gonna break my fall

An invisible net waiting, and you can't see it at all

There's an invisible net waiting, it's underneath my feet

And I know if I fall it will catch me

And bring me home

I'm standing on a highwire, taking quite a risk

I'm standing on a highwire, but it's so hard to resist

I'm standing on a highwire, so high I can't hear a sound

And they told me never look down, never look down, never look down

So I never look down to see

Your eyes looking at me

Chorus
